Hi guys, I was just talking to John the other day about 4.0 and what was happening when he and I realized neither of us had a clue, so we managed to clear things up and I just want to let you know what's happening. We are currently in Brickspace 4.0 (For more info click here) with star ratings, a modified logo, wider columns, several new graphical elements and a new search box. You might be excited by 4.0 but you haven't seen nothing yet! 4.1 is coming extremely soon (A month or so) with totally new features. I can't reveal too much but here's a hint- we've just got the help of a person we know who's a flash genius! Another whole new feature I want to promote is 'Get involved' and you can find more info by clicking here.

At Brickspace, we try to be totally different from other unofficial LEGO blogs, so we thought it would be great to try and get our readers to get involved by letting them write on the blog. Brickspace Dictionary: n x n x n

n x n x n (n.)
When measuring Lego bricks, we usually use the n x n x n system. This is much like normal measurements in which we provide the width x length x height of the brick, though sometimes the height is not required.

Most Lego bricks and plates can be classed as either 1xn or 2xn. In these examples, n could be any number. So 1xn means any brick that has one of its measurements (apart from height) as 1. This could be a 1x2 brick, a 1x4 brick or even a 1x16 brick! Similarly, 2xn bricks can have any length, but have to have a width of 2 (we usually put the shortest measurement as the width, but in the case of square (eg. 2x2) bricks, it doesn't matter).

This measuring system has a flaw, however: the units of width and length (sometimes shown by □ (a square)) are not the same as the unit of height (sometimes shown by ◇ (a diamond)). However, they can be interchanged using the 5:6 ratio, which is that every 5 brick height units equals 6 horizontal stud units.

You may often see a brick has a height of 2/3 (eg. 2 x 2 x 2/3). This is the only height measurement <1, because for every one height unit, three plates can take its place. Thus, 2/3 means that the brick is two plates high: say, for example, a cheese wedge. As I said, this is the only fraction measurement: 1/3 would just be a plate, and 3/3 is a whole, a 1.

The width and length measurements can also be fractions, though only 1/2s. If you use a jumper plate (a 1 x 2 plate with a single stud in the middle of it), you can offset the length or width by 1/2.

Joe Vig (n.) (Joe Vig)
Joe Vig is a minifigure thought up by Mike Crowley, Nelson and Patrick Yrizarry. He is a common figure used in Vignettes who is always in danger.

Crowley and the Yrizarrys' first idea was to have 'Joe Food', a minifigure which they would photograph in different restaurants and post the pictures on LUGNET. They then changed the name to Joe Vig ('Vig' being short for 'vignette').

Joe Vig has brown hair, a red shirt, red trousers, and the first Ron Weasley face. Other hats and accessories must be white to keep with the Joe Vig theme.

The first Joe Vig contest was held in June 2005 as Joe's popularity soared in the early years of the 21st century. A full list of Vignettes with Joe Vig in them can be found on the LUGNET page here .

Brickspace Dictionary: URPs

URP (abbrev.) (Ug·ly Rock Piece)
The URP family consists of two large hollow rocky pieces that are used commonly in landscaping and creating mountains. The URPs are also found in many Castle MOCs.

'URP' usually stands for Ugly Rock Piece, though it can also stand for Ugly Rock Part. They are 'ugly' because of their square, blocky and un-rock-like look. There are two types of URP:

LURP, standing for Little Ugly Rock Piece. These are roughly triangular in shape.

BURP, standing for Big Ugly Rock Piece. These are quite wide and square in their shape.

BURPs and LURPs are generally meant to be built upon with more bricks in the same colour:

Brickspace Dictionary: BBC

BBC (abbrev.) (Bi·o·nicle Based Cre·ation)
The term BBC is used to signify a Bionicle creation. Though the abbreviation may also relate to the British Broadcasting Corporation, in the LOC it refers to a creation which uses Bionicle, Technic and some System bricks. BBCs are usually named with a mock-Toa name or a variation on a usual Bionicle name, such as that of a Bohrok or Rahi.

On the Bionicle fansite BZPower, there is a monthly contest held called BBC.

Or at least, that's what Jordan Schwartz (Sir Nadroj) thinks. In his latest freaky, slightly disturbing, loads of tentacles are grabbing a heart, dragging it to the very dark depths of hell. Well, that's how I interpret it. It's modern art, this is all to be expected.

Cheese Wedge (n.) (Cheese Wedge)
The Cheese Wedge, sometimes known as the Cheese Brick, or Cheese slope, is a relatively new addition to the slope family of Lego bricks.

The cheese wedge, so named because of its cheese-like shape and minifig compatibility, measures 1 x 1 x 2/3, meaning it is 2 plates tall.

An addition to the cheese wedge is the cheese grater brick, named by AFOL Mike Yoder. The cheese wedge is a 1 x 2 x 2/3 slope and has a grate on it, making it look like a cheese grater. It was released in 2008.

Brickspace Dictionary: Sigfig

Sigfig (abbrev.) (Sig·na·ture Fig·ure)
A Sigfig is a defining minifigure for you and your user in the Lego Online Commuinty. Sometimes called a 'sigfiggy', the abbreviation groups Signature and Figure (from minifigure) to create Sigfig. 'Sigfig' is usually spelt with a capital S or no capitals at all.

Sigfigs can be shown to the public on sheets such as the one to the right, which is Joris Blok's. On these sheets, MOCers outline the best points of their Sigfigs and what they mean.

On many forums you can add an 'avatar' of yourself. A Sigfig is just this: a minifigure representation of yourself that other users can recognise. Sigfigs do not necessarily have to resemble you: they can be whatever you want them to be.

The Sigfiggy Abuser's Club on MOCpages is a popular club which holds an annual competition to see who can abuse other users' Sigfigs in the best way possible, called the Darwin Awards.

Bricks don't have to connect completely...

I have recently found two MOCs on MOCpages which have something in common: they both utilise building techniques in which bricks only touch at one corner, and the stud-and-tube joint is not completely used. This is an interesting and unique idea for complex designs, as you will see.

The first MOC is Jerac 's Cobrahn , a sleek, 'swooshable' spaceship that has a clever technique in its wings, where a 1x1 circular plate has been placed at the end stud of 1x4 and 1x3 bricks, then those bricks are connected normally at the other end, creating a wonderfully smooth, curved shape.

Next up is Marek Markiewicz ' brilliant Monowheel , which uses loads of 1x2 plates to create a smooth wheel for a large wheel-based vehicle of the future. If you check out the rest of the photos, you'll see Markiewicz has cleverly integrated the wheel into the frame, and though it is fragile, it looks brilliant.

Carrier-Class Light Attack Sub

It's not just the Beatles who live in a Yellow Submarine. Vid' has recebtly shown off his submarining skills and astounded his fans with an insight into a rarely-built theme: sub-marine equipment and vehicles. Full to the brim with guns, gadgets and greeblies, Vid's underwater tank has some novel features (including a full SNOT 180 (Sd) joint at the centre), but some places are slightly fishy in design (notably the side of the windscreen). Nonetheless, it's a great creation.

Brickspace Dictionary: Fleebnork

Fleebnorks are fictional Lego creatures that were popular at teh start of the 21st century. They consist of a 2x2 parabolic disc attached to a 'scorpion' part.

Fleebnorks eat through power couplings and any other metal and Lego space-related objects they can get their claws on. Currently the only way of stopping a Fleebnork is burning it with a plasma flamethrower.

Fleebnorks, sometimes abbreviated to 'Fleebs', make a distincitive sound like 'pleh'. They are usually trans. light green or yellow. If a Fleebnork does not keep with this colour scheme, they are called 'Pseudofleebs'

New Fleebs are being made up all the time, the most notable being the Pimpnork, a Fleebnork with a sliver shell and a black body.

Brickspace Dictionary: Dark Age

Dark Age (n.) (Dark Age)
Used mainly by AFOLs, 'Dark Age' is a popular phrase used to sum up a period in one's life when you were not interested in Lego or active in the Lego online forums and community. This mainly happens because a person is a fan of Lego as a child, then grows out of Lego when they go to University or get a job. They then rediscover Lego later, and become active in the LOC. The period when that person is not interested in Lego is called their dark age.

This can also mean a dark time when a MOCer is online, and when they only build one thing.

Steeple Brink Cove & Cruel Coppinger

I like Pirates stuff, but I don't build in the theme, so on that basis you could probably say that Pirates aren't really "my thing" - but I do like this little cove by Derfel Cadarn.

I especially like the brick effect on the pier - I know this is not a new method, but I do think it is particularly effective here.

The whole hustle and bustle of the scene with the rocks either side makes this an immediate fave'.

Brickspace Dictionary: COW

COW (acr.) (Curved Out Wedge)
The acronym 'COW' is short for Curved Out Wedge. In the early 2000s, Lego started releasing curved versions of the classic straight slopes. Though they are much rarer than the slopes, they are used widely in MOCs as they offer a smoother, more interesting alternative to the usual straight slope.

I don't think there is any way humanely possible for me to not blog Sir Nadroj's awe-inspiring MOC straight away. It's just too cool. Based on Disneyland's 'Alien Encounter: The ExtraTERRORestrial' attraction, Nadroj (Schwartz)'s latest Lifelite masterpiece includes a great smoke machine as well. I can't put how amazing this creation is into words, so here is the video Schwartz made to accompany the MOC:

Brickspace Dictionary: Chibi

Chibi (n.) (Chi·bi)
The word 'Chibi' is used as a suffix before the name of a MOC to show that it is a smaller version of another MOC or set. For example, the MOC shown on the right is Jacob's Chibi Monarch. It is a smaller, 'cuter' version of his other creation called Monarch, shown below the Chibi Monarch.

The word 'Chibi' comes from a series of manga drawings and cartoons of small, nose-less and large-eyed cute-looking characters. This series is called Chibi.

What've we been up to?

It seems to be the case that when someone joins our staff, we stop posting their creations. So I thought I might just show you guys what we've been up to in the last few weeks, since most of our staff are brilliant builders as well as good bloggers.

Sadly, Teikjoon has informed his fans that he will be leaving the Lego community indefinately, and has espressed himself in a poem:

Good ol' Zach Macias (aka. ZachMG, Mindgame Studios) has recently made a short, random, and really quite disturbing film about a car seller's sales pitch. Though it's rather crazy, and the use of language is rather uncalled for (but I usually don't mind bad language). It really doesn't matter, he never actually says it. But he intended to. There's a big difference there.

As I said, it's a bit... strange

You guys will be happy to know that the Dane Cook bandwagon has finally slowed and stopped. SO FAR... DUM DUM DUMMMMMMM!!

Interview with Jordan Schwartz

Prolific teen builder Jordan Schwartz agreed to do an interview for us here at Brickspace, so here it is:

>To start off, could you tell us a little about yourself?

As many builders online know, my real name is Jordan Schwartz. I've been building since I was three, and I've been active in the online community since I was thirteen (I am currently sixteen years of age.) I am not a member of any LUGs, nay have I attended any LEGO convention, so nobody really knows much about Jordan the person, but my MOCs tell a lot about Jordan the builder. LEGO is my only true hobby; having dabbled in other non-bricky mediums before, I know this is where I belong. I do have a few other interests; I enjoy reading when I get the time (though I rarely have the time), I am a passionate conservative libertarian, and I love collecting taxidermy (which gets me pounched on every time I post a picture of my animals on flickr!) I also keep a pet Jenday Conure named Autumn, who can't get enough of LEGO - her element of choice is the 2 x 4 brick; nibbling at the tube-and-coupling system is a lot of fun for her! In addition to my flickr, MOCpages and Brickshelf galleries, I have an official website that can be viewed at brickstud.com.

>Can you blame us? They're dead animals! But moving on, are there any builders that influenced (or still influence) you when you began to develop your style?

Well, I'm not sure I'd say I've got much of a "style", with the exception of my delicate connections! But certainly there are many builders that have subliminally influenced me over the past two years or so. Certainly some that stand out are Legohaulic, Nannan, Moko, Michael Jasper, RebelRock, and pretty much everyone over at Builders Lounge. I feel very fortunate to have been able to be a part of that community when I was early in my LEGO building "career", and I totally attribute my quality to them. And because I build in just about every theme, there are plenty of other influential builders out there that have affected me as a builder.

>That brings me to my next point. It seems almost like you make it your business to build in every theme possible- are you simply not interested enough to stick to one theme, or are you too interested in everything else?

I think it's fair to say a little of both. I'd get very bored if I built, say, space ships all day, but I've also got an interest in many other themes, which works out well for me. Also, sometimes I'll build something simply if I have a good minifigure or technique for the theme, which also keeps my MOC collection diverse. It's safe to say I'm usually partial to historical MOCs, but even that has a million and one sub-themes under it (from pirates to Victorian.) But like I said - it all works out well in the end.

>You've impressed a lot of people (myself included) with how prolific you are. Your flickr photostream contains over one and a half thousand photos, all taken within about a year and a half. The majority of those may be single minifigures built to demonstrate a single technique, but you still put out full models much faster than most other builders. Are you devoting a huge amount of time to the hobby, or do you just find that you can turn a concept in your head into a finished model very quickly?

Thanks very much! Again, I think it's a little of both. I do devote a ton of time into the hobby (most of my free time, in fact), but at the same time, if I'm motivated and enthusiastic about a project, I can finish it quickly. But enthusiasm really is the key to prolificness - if I lose interest in a project, it'll take forever to finish it seems, or I don't finish it at all. The perfect example is my Fun House.

Well, first I'd like to say that the more LEGO fans out there, the better. We have all had to start somewhere, right? But yes, there seems to have been a tidal wave of spam within the past few months. I haven't done too much about it; every now and again I'll delete a comment or two, and unfortunately I have had to block a couple users (the first time in about two years!) but it's truly getting to a point where it is intolerable. Sometimes people might say that I don't take negative feedback well if it is their comment I delete, but that's not true, as long as it is constructive. That seems to be a problem as of late - comments like "I don't like this", or "It is weak." Alright, that's your opinon, but we all know what opinons are like (well, maybe those younger fans don't know that expression.) Provide some constructive feedback - I tend to appreciate that kind more than wholly positive feedback because more time is put into it.

For all the new builders out there, you simply have to keep building. If you look at my last flickr page and compare it to my current, first one you will notice a night and day difference. If you truly enjoy it, just keep at it because with every single creation, you will get better and better; that's a fact that has been perfectly illustrated by today's top builders.

Lego Star Wars fan 'finds' two MORE Chrome Darth Vaders

This "lucky" Lego SW fan has recently found two chrome Darth Vaders in a new Lego set he bought. Yeah right. Yawn. Just so you're not so gullible (you do know it's written on the ceiling, right?) as to think it's real, here's the evidence why:

He already has a Chrome Darth Vader. So (as I was learning about in Maths only a few hours ago), the probability of him getting another (let alone two!) is very very low.
Why would he make a video saying he will open a box to show the public he is not that lucky?
He seems remarkably unsurprised that he's found another two CDVs
He opens the box by ripping off the back. Thus, he may be hiding the fact that the popper tab thingie is not working because he hid the two CDVs in there.
He manages to not notice the second CDV until he is done blabbing about the first.
Both CDVs are in the same place, the furthest down from the 'top' where he opens the box from.

See? FAKE FAKE FAKE. Go spam his YouTube, children. Be off with you! Fly, my pretties, FLY!

Brickspace Dictionary: Greco Joint

Greco Joint (n. / tecn.) (Gre·co Joint)

The Greco Joint is a little-known SNOT 180 technique that works on all LEGO pieces with long tubes.

The Greco Joint is the trademark technique of Felix Greco, and used famously in his Rabbit creation. The joint needs only three parts: two bricks (with long tubes: only plates are exempt from this) and as many small cross-axels as there are tubes that line up between the two bricks.

The cross-axels are wedged into the tubes, and they join the two bricks together. However, this joint is known to be notoriously hard to undo. It is a tight fit in the tubes, and it can be very hard to take the cross-axels out of the joint.

As with the Enjary joint, the Greco joint is not necessarily Felix Greco's original idea. If you know of someone who has discovered the joint before Greco, email me. Thanks!

The LL-998 "Sapphire Condor" is an immense ship - and I should know, I had the pleasure of spending several hours in the company of the vessel and its creator Ed Diment (aka LEGO Monster) today to take these photos, and make a cool video of its secret feature...

The craft is really heavy, and massive, but still easily swooshable with the inclusion of two "handles" atop the main superstructure - these handles run down through the framework of the ship, making it quite safe to pick up and blast the enemy!

Enjary Joint (n. / tecn.) (En·ja·ry Joint)

The Enjary Joint is a particular type of SNOT 180 joint. SNOT 180 means that the technique combines two bricks that point 180˚ away from each other (ie. mirrored at their base or top).

The Enjary Joint was found and publicised by Didier Enjary, though he is not the creator of the joint. The joint consists of three elements: two plates to join (they must be plates) and as many levers as possible. The flat end of the levers is pushed between the tubes on the underside of one plate, and another plate is placed on top.

If you know who created the joint, please let me know at my email , and I will change this accordingly. However, I have found a Brickshelf member called Kerouac who has tried the. If anyone knows his real name, or someone else who has tried the joint before him, let me know.

Flickr's Lego artist, Udronotto , has just recently converted Hollywood A-lister Tom Hanks to a Lego form, in his Lego-ised frame from Forrest Gump.

For those of you who don't know, Forrest Gump is an exteremely famous 90s film, starring Tom Hanks as a man (Mr. Gump) who experiences nearly all of the famous [American] events of the late 20th century, whilst pursuing a sad romance with Jen-NEE. He goes to war in Vietnam, witnesses Watergate and even the Apollo 11 launch, to name a few. It's like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but better as the main character actually has a personality, and isn't Brad Pitt. It's really a brilliant film. Go watch.

Yeah, yeah, I know this isn't one of Udronotto's best (note the reverse shadows on the trees in the background: the trees are actually casting shadows of light (!?)), but I want you all to appreciate Forrest Gump as a film.

The craft, part of the Neo-Classic Space March event, just oozes yumminess all round, from the beautiful engines to the main hull, and of course those awesome wings. Top marks!

Classic Space is a famous Lego series of sets. It ran from 1978 - 1987, and was released just after the invention of the minifig.

Classic Space sets are known for their simplicity and colour scheme. They always have a light grey + blue + trans orange colour scheme, and came in simple shapes and with simple building techniques. Though having a basic idea on space (spaceships were driven with steering wheels, and there were only a few ships with cockpits), they inspired many young builders and cleverly followed the momentum brought by the Space Race in the 60s.

The pirates in this scene by SlyOwl are in a spot of bother - not only are their sails tattered and torn, their supplies overboard, but they are destined to end their days at the bottom of the ocean, spiralling down to the sea bed in a gigantic whirlpool... Lovely stuff.

Sir Nadroj brings us Ticha, an interesting humanoid mecha. Ticha (whose name and look bear a resemblance to Tigger, in my mind) has 26 points of articulation and a poseable tail. My only criticism is that it could have had a better face - something with a smiling mouth, or at least two eyes. And stripes!

It is a huge diorama (Keith says it's bigger than your mum with diabetes) with loads of cars made by all your favourite MOCers, including Chuck Citrin and Nannan Zhang too. How to make Walter

Hi guys, earlier John told you all about 'Walter', so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and show you how to make him in 5 really easy steps.
But before that, these are the pieces you'll need.

1) So, now you've got all the pieces ready, here's what to do. First attach these three pieces together.

2) Now, put the last part to one side and put the next two pieces together.

3) Now, get back the piece from the first step and attach it to the one from the previous set to get this:

Finally attach the next two pieces and you're done. Make sure to push the eyes on properly or they'll fall off.

Make sure you send in your pics of walter to brickspace. Enjoy!

Walter the M8!

This is an immense post, because I want to tell all you guys about the phenomenon that is Walter the M8.

Walter is an easy-to-build Lego droid that contains only 7 parts. He was designed by Don Solo, and the M8 theme has caught on and is now a whole bandwagon. In this post I will show you some of the best of the M8 pics. Here goes...

We're gonna start with a simple MOC by WisrthanU , in which Obi-Wan (!?) is trying to persuade Walter to not jump off the pier and kill himself. At least, that's what I got out of it.

WisrthanU has also provided us with this great pic of Walter dressed up as a Viper, a popular spaceship in the LOC.

ALIEN_COMMANDER brings us this fantastic shot of when Walter met Wall-E.

Walter's creator, Don Solo himself, has a Weekly adventures of Walter project. Here's what happened when Walter tried alcohol!

Mr. Solo also brings Walter and a Rock Monster together.

Don also chromed Walter, for a special-edition M8 which will stand alongside his other chrome pieces and his gold 3PO. Lucky guy...

This is one of my favourite shots, also by Don Solo. Walter is right in the box too!

Things get a little hot for Walter in this exasperating shot, by the king of M8s, Don Solo. Funnily enough, Don has provided us with the other end of the thermal spectrum too...

Walter always keeps a cool head in tough situations.

There is no end to the customisation of Walter either. Plums_Deify has added a simple pair of shoulder pads to add a commander-like effect.

Wunztwice shows us a well-designed M6 droid...

Rocko has made a large-scale version of Walter, to make sure no one picks on him. This is one of my favourites.

The Yubi N-Motion

MOCer extroadinaire, Nannan Zhang, released pictures of his amazing new Yubi N-Motion MOC just yesterday.

Reminiscent of one of those three-wheel eco-friendly 'scooters' of the future that appear so often in DK Eyewitness books, Nannan's banana-shaped vehicle is certainly a feat of Lego building. It cleverly uses an old hockey helmet part, and has some great ideas for wheels too. Nannan has done well to keep the exposure under control, and the white of the MOC does not blend with the white of the background. Excellent MOC, and we at Brickspace hope Nannan builds more frequently in the future!

Pointless Adventure 3

A new set of Brickfilmers, Lumpycowstudios, brings us the third installment in the Pointless Adventure series...

The film, as a whole, is very much like the Brickfilmers' name. Sure, it's funny, it has a little bit of style, and it's good for a laugh, but on a deeper level it's rather immature and doesn't make much (if any) sense.

The film is one of many zombie Brickfilms out there on YouTube, part of a huge phoenomenon which is almost as big as the Indiana-Jones-Brickfilm cult, which has really gotten on my nerves lately. Why the heck do so many people make the same film?

This film, however, stands out from the others. It has a real Brickfilming style, and it is clear that the makers have a talent for emulating physics and blood with Lego. Look closely at the blood effects, and you will see what I mean by that.

The sound effects are too loud. Again. And half of them are boring iLife sound effects (which come as default with every Mac - trust me, I have one).

As far as plots go, er... well, there's some pesemistic dude who lives on his own though sounds like he's 16, who has a very loud, half-deaf friend (the most annoying part of the whole movie) and some other mad, possibly high girl who tags along and shoots zombies. The stumble through a badly thought-out, mad, zombie-fighting plot, and end up saving the world or something. I'm not quite sure. It just kinda... happens.

Apart from that, I really rate this Brickfilm. Though it may be amateur-ish, mad, and full of the plot that some 15 year-old American teenagers would think up (and have), it has a certain style in its Brickfilming and building, and some great animation techniques. So just ignore the plot.

This entry by 'Ricky features a great idea for a flame thrower and just holds you in with some sort of style.

Most likely one of my favorite entries (other than my own of course) is the pirate designed by Tadashistate who executes pirate and space beautifully together.

Hand Car

One of our most devoted fans, Dave Boddy, has emailed me to tell me of his latest Brickfilm - entitled 'Hand Car'.

Boddy's newest film is certainly in keeping with his mad, quick-fire, hilarious style. Though it's quite short, it has a whole load of stuff compacted into its 41 seconds. This is one of few Brickfilms to show flair not just in Brickfilming, but in building the sets too. 'Hand Car' contains footage of Boddy's huge railway bridge .

Dane Cook gets squashed by an elephant on a bicycle

Hah!
I bet you thought you'd seen the last of the Dane Cook bandwagon. You are very wrong, monsieur! This is not the end, not even the beginning of the end. THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE BEGINNING!!!

Yet another Dane Cook movie by that great (though not-so-great after this awful-but-quite-witty bandwagon) Brickfilmer, 0ldScratch . This is my least favourite of the bunch, that's why I published this one last. Plot = 0. Interesting animation = 0. Time and hard work put into this = 0.000. Yes, I even added in decimal places to show just how crappy this movie is.

Breathing Space

Brickfilms.com now have a YouTube podcast thingy, on which they post the 'best' Brickfilms out there.

They have posted, and I quote the following, and film with a description of "my first, worst, and really lame movie", and another film in which a dull, lifeless, stupid 'Brickfilmer' monologues whilst posing minifigs under police cars and only remembers what he was going to say 20 seconds into the movie. He then continues to monologue in a dull, confused way for five minutes after that. I never considered self-harm before that movie, but during it... if there was a knife around, I wouldn't be here typing this.

However I HAVE found something 'decent'. This film is called 'Breathing Space', and is a sci-fi 'thriller' in which a robot malfunctions and some spaceman chases it around a spaceship. The film is very Space Odyssey-esque, and has the same mood and feel to it. Its graphics are good for an amateur, and the CGI robot interacts well with the real environment. Faces of the minifigures are edited in afterwards, but do not blur when the 'fig is out of focus. This causes huge aesthetic issues.

The music is, on the whole, heavy metal-ish and ghastly. It aims to try and up the tempo of the otherwise slow and dull film, and fails in that respect. Sound effects are loud and glitchy, and I found the film much more enjoyable with the sound muted.

The film, as Chris would say, has no plot. Well, it has a beginning (robot malfunctions), a middle (spaceman chases robot into room without gravity) and... well, that's it. For some reason, if you throw your helmet onto a malfunctioning robot, it is put back to normal. What the HELL? I watched the ending five times, and I still don't understand WHY that happens? Why is he smiling? Why is the gravity back? What actually HAPPENED?

So, all-in-all, a pretty crappy film. However, the credits are good. That's about it.

So please DON'T visit the Brickfilms 'podcast' (ie YouTube account).

This time, I bring you something new. Well, it's a Dane Cook movie from 0ldScratch . Yes, another one, but I've been pretty obsessed with SpastikChuwawa's films for a few days now. I seriously think that these films destroy the underlying purpose and point of Brickfilm-making... for all you budding Brickfilmers out there, please note that a good Brickfilm requires hard work and time put into the project.

Hey guys and gals!

I took this interview, with expert MOCer and TBB member, many weeks ago, and I've unfortunately not had time to post it until now. So here we go, Nannan Zhang!

When did you start making MOCs? What drew you into the LEGO® hobby?

I’ve been making MOCs ever since I owned bricks, but it wasn’t until 2004 that I became much more involved in building. Seeing all the amazing creations on Brickshelf for the first time really inspired me to become a great builder myself.

How on earth did you manage to refine such an amazing style (the Whimsical World)? How do you plan your abstract creations?

Refining my style wasn’t a short process. It took me about three years to get to a proficient level of building; since then, I’ve been expanding my building themes and the size of my creations. My most recent diorama spans 4’X4’, which is something I didn’t expect myself to accomplish just a year ago. Many LEGO fans have associated my creations with an offbeat style, which are most apparent in my surrealist works. Planning for these creations and many other non-abstract ones usually come to me as an image in my mind. If the creation needs to be big, I usually place several Bricklink orders before beginning to build. Once I have the basic parts I need, it’s all non-stop building from there.

Where do you hope to go in the future? Will you continue as a LEGO®-certified professional, or take another career route? I've seen you are an exceptional viola player.Will you considering being a musician?

My future plans for LEGO will remain as an intensely involved hobby of building, collecting, selling, and blogging. My career goal is to become a doctor, which entails many more years of medical education and practice after I graduate from college. One of my lesser known hobbies to the LEGO community is music. I play the viola regularly and participate in concerts and recitals.

What, in your opinion, is your favourite creation, and why?

My favorite personal creation is Cry of Dreams, simply because its significance as a personal statement means the most to me. I have many favorite creations from other builders; you can see some of them in my Flickr gallery under “Favorites.” I like creations that are not only well built but also well presented and unique in their genres.

Peaceful Lego

Last week, by friend Brent (Thwaak) and I started a new group on Flickr.

We are both old enough to remember a time when LEGO was a violence-free toy. Before Star Wars, Cowboys and Pirates, before even the Yellow Castle.

It was a time when LEGO made fire engines, passenger planes and little gas stations. When the first minifigs appeared, they were firemen, bus drivers, doctors and astronauts, peacefully exploring space (or just the moon, Classic Space looked as if it was all on the moon).

When I think about it now, my friends and I could play for weeks with LEGO and never feel the need to stage a battle between our minifigs.

Today, however, it's different. Knights need the trolls and the undead, the astronauts are plundering Mars and waging a war on the indigenous population, the good Exo-force boys fight the bad robots, the Agents are trying to stop the evil plans of their own stereotypical nemesis... And there are the Clone wars, of course.

When I look at my own Flickr protostream, I see quite a few of the gray metal MOCs and armed minifigs. On the other hand the forums are full of beautiful creations, where no-one is pointing anything at anyone. Hence the Peaceful Lego.

If you thought I was gonna give up on the whole 'Dane Cook short movie' front, think again. There's loads more of these to come.

This short by SpastikChuwawa is a nice little witty movie if you have a minute or two to spare and you're already in a good mood, for this won't cheer you up out of a depression or depressed stupor. It's not that good. Pfft.

Oh my gosh. I've only just seen the new brickfilms.com and it's terrible! Admittedly it's better than the previous design, but it's still ugly, what with the glowing letters in the menu bar, and Brickfilms.com, in my opinion, had got worse and worse since the new owners came in. However, DO NOT FRET. On a slightly happier note, Bricks In Motion has gone from strength to strength and it looks beautiful, even better, PHILIP HEINRICH HAS TAKEN IT OVER, WAHOOOOOOOO! Ok, I'll calm down now, but I think that's true. I'll keep you posted if there is any further news, or brickfilms.com mishaps! I know not all of you will agree with me, and I'm open to debate, so feel free to tell us your views on the comments.
NB The BIM archive should be up and running pretty soon (hopefully)!

Chrispockst has been producing innovative models and ideas from his first flickr upload, and the T-47 Bolt Interceptor is no exception. He cites is inspiration as coming from Adrian Florea and Nnenn, and anyone familiar with their work will recognize what he's talking about- the nonstandard angles, and rule-breaking piece placement. The fact that he's used purple, a relatively rare colour, makes it even more unique.
